One of America's most visionary climbers, Mugs Stump was best known for his first ascent of the Emperor Face on Mount Robson in the Canadian Rockies and a triptych of brilliant Alaskan climbs — the East Face of the Moose's Tooth, the Moonflower Buttress on Mount Hunter, and a one-day solo of Denali's Cassin Ridge. After his death in a crevasse fall on Denali in 1992, friends established the Mugs Stump Award to help others seek out striking and highly technical objectives in the most remote mountains of the world, climbs that are a celebration of boldness, purity and simplicity. In 2008, to celebrate the 16th year of the Mugs Stump Awards, Joe Iurato created a moving tribute to Mugs' spirit and legacy as a prelude to the announcement of this year's grant recipients.

For filmmaker W.C. (Bill) Rogers it was a dream come true. The subject of his epic journey was at the top of his sport. Newsweek AND Time magazines adorned their covers with the irreverent image of Bode Miler as he headed into the 2006 Winter Olympics. But at the end of the games headlines asked: “The worst Olympian ever?” Afterwards Bode kept skiing. When he captured his second overall World Cup trophy in 2008 the question remained, how do we define greatness? This project shadows Bode from his beginnings on 425 acres in the roughly hewn mountains of New Hampshire; to the Junior Olympics where he changes the shape of skiing by jumping onto a pair of recreational skis – the K2-4 – and wins by a mile (more accurately by 2 seconds); and to the present where Bode’s character – intelligence/arrogance, confidence/stubbornness, victory/failure – is at the heart of a proven champion. The film and Bode are fractions from disaster.

The technology requires a hard hat carrying a small video camera where visual information from the camera is translated into pulses that reach the tongue. This film is a brief glimpse into Danny's original take on building better, more environmentally thoughtful surfboards.
